A Story of Hope and Perseverance: Maureen’s Journey with Weatherization

Chippewa Luce Mackinac Community Action Agency (CLMCAA) is excited to share the weatherization success story of Maureen Suggitt. During an initial inspection, conducted by Nicholas Moon, EA/QCI, asbestos was discovered in the furnace run and boots of her home. At that time, CLMCAA lacked the deferral funding needed to assist her. Undeterred, Nick kept Maureen’s file open and advocated for her, confident that one day they could help.
Maureen’s journey became even more challenging when she was diagnosed with cancer. Despite her circumstances, she remained hopeful and kept fighting. When deferral funding became available, Nick encouraged Maureen to reapply, and this time, CLMCAA was able to act.
The first step was using deferral funding to remove the asbestos, ensuring Maureen could breathe clean air in her home. After the asbestos was removed, a full audit revealed that her water heater, furnace, and refrigerator all needed to be replaced. Air sealing and insulation were also completed throughout her home, significantly improving its energy efficiency.
Thanks to the dedication of Weatherization Director Bobbi Palmer, Nick, and the entire program team, Maureen’s home transformation was made possible by utilizing multiple funding sources, including BIL, LIHEAP, WxDef, DOE Deferral funds, and EO:
• $8,573.35 was used in DOE Deferral funding to remove asbestos.
• $26,941.29 was invested in Weatherization, including $5,229.00 in materials and labor and $602.00 in Health and Safety improvements under BIL funding.
The remaining costs were covered through EO (Energy Optimization).
Maureen’s gratitude is heartfelt. In her own words, “Thank you so much for the help. I will be forever grateful for this program and the wonderful professional staff and contractors that all worked together to make this happen for me.”
Nick’s commitment to helping Maureen reflects the mission of CLMCAA: to go above and beyond to make homes safer, healthier, and more energy efficient.
