Early Childhood Programs:

The goal of Early Childhood Programs is to provide every preschooler with the best educational opportunities through our child-centered, hands-on curriculum set in a rich learning environment that is created through our families, community, and professional staff. This includes comprehensive programs for childhood health, education, and parental involvement throughout Chippewa, Luce, and Mackinac Counties. Supporting early learning and development from birth to age five.

Various options of service are provided to children and families. The program operates from September through May. Not all options are available at all locations.

We currently offer:

Head Start

  • Head Start is a federally funded program with eligibility criteria based on age, family income and other categories set forth by the program ensuring that families with the highest need receive priority.
  • Children must be at least 3 years old on or before September 1st of the current school year.
  • Centers located in Brimley, Cedarville, Drummond Island, Kinross, Newberry and Sault Ste. Marie.
  • Classrooms meet 7 hours and 15 minutes per day, Monday through Thursday. Meals and snacks are provided.

Early Head Start

  • Early Head Start is a federally funded program which provides comprehensive child development and family support services to pregnant women, infants and toddlers up to age three in either a home based or center-based option.
  • The program aims to foster strong parent-child relationships while preparing young children for future learning and success with both home-based and center-based options.
  • Serves pregnant moms and children ages 0–3.
  • Full day/full year center-based services are provided in Sault Ste. Marie, Newberry and St. Ignace.
  • Home-based services are provided in Sault Ste. Marie and Kinross.
  • Home Visitor and parents plan ways to help the child learn using parent-child interactions, daily routines and household materials in the comfort of your own home. Home Visitor and families come together two times per month for planned socializations.

Great Start Readiness 

  • Children must be 4 years old by December 1st with priority given to children turning 4 on or before September 1st.
  • Classrooms located at the Ronald Calery Community Center and the Sault Early Learning Center with limited slots in Brimley and Cedarville.
  • Days and times are dependent upon location. Meals and snacks are provided.

Strong Beginnings

  • Children must be 3 years old on or before December 1st with priority given to children turning 3 on or before September 1st.
  • Classrooms meet for 7 hours per day, Monday through Thursday. Meals and snacks are provided.

  • Children must be at least 3 years old on or before September 1st of that program year.
  • Head Start is a federally funded program with eligibility criteria based on age, family income, and other categories set forth by the program ensuring that families with the highest need receive priority.

  • Income limits have been lifted for GSRP with priority given to families with incomes at or below 400% of poverty.

Strong Beginnings

  • Children must be 3 years old on or before December 1st with priority given to children turning 3 on or before September 1st.
  • Income limits up to 250% of poverty.
